Digitopia follows the adventures of Dotty and her friend Hex, a simple two dimensional line. Hex can make angles and the most he can make is six. His favourite shape is a hexagon. He’s happy with this, but one day he really wants to make a curve. With a lot of effort he learns to bend, then multiply, and suddenly he can create all kinds of shapes, eventually popping into three dimensions, discovering he can turn into anything he wants to. Dotty follows Hex into his newly created digital world, setting off on a rollercoaster ride of surprises.

Tom Dale Company creates extraordinary performances that bring together urban contemporary dance, electronic music and digital art. Digitopia’s visually stunning integration of live dance and digital technology creates a world that defies the usual rules of gravity and physics, where straight lines curve and sound is seen.

MOKO Dance is a National dance partnership dedicated to opening the eyes of children and their families to the power of dance. Led by DanceEast (Ipswich), MOKO Dance unites Nottingham Lakeside Arts (Nottingham), Pavilion Dance South West (Bournemouth), Sadler’s Wells (London), South East Dance (Brighton and Kent) and Theatre Bristol (Bristol) in their shared vision of bringing bold and innovative work to young audiences across the UK.

Previous commissions include MOKO Mix, a double bill of work by Tamzin Fitzgerald (The Rock) and Christopher Marney (The Suitcase Story), and most recently Akram Khan Company’s Chotto Desh to be premiered this autumn on Friday 23 October at DanceEast, Ipswich, before embarking on a UK tour. The portfolio of work MOKO Dance has toured nationally since its launch in 2013 includes Hop by Nevski Prospekt (Belgium), Chalk About by Scotland’s Curious Seed, Constellations by Spain’s Aracaladanza, and In A Deep Dark Wood by London-based company gobbledegook.

Tom Dale says about the work “Digitopia opens up a playground of possibilities where we can play with our perception of reality, the physical rules of our environment and the movement characters that this might produce. I want to have some fun with some of the digital techniques we have been exploring as a company and I think the creation of Digitopia will provide a wonderful place to explore the meeting points of the digital and physical worlds. By attempting to bring the digital world into physical being we can play with the physics of our environment. This theme is a constant preoccupation of mine and one we can have a lot of fun with. By questioning the rules of reality we can expand our imaginations and challenge our normal ways of working and we can also learn more about our own reality and place within it.”

Shona Powell, Director of Nottingham Lakeside Arts, one of the MOKO Dance partners, said “MOKO Dance is thrilled to be supporting the creation and premiere of this ground-breaking and beautiful new dance theatre piece for children and families, which we firmly believe has the potential to delight and intrigue audiences of all ages, but most particularly children.”

As with all other MOKO Dance performances, Digitopia will be accompanied by MOKO Dance creative dance workshops and foyer activities. Immediately after the performances audiences will be able to join Tom Dale Company for “Stay & Play” sessions on stage, exploring dance and technology. MOKO Dance new tour announced!

Nevski Prospekt in association with MOKO Dance

A poetic physical dance theatre production for children aged 4+ and their families. Mr Dedalus and his son Icarus are trapped on an island. They long for home, but there’s no way to get off. Luckily Mr Dedalus is an inventor and thinks hard to come up with a plan to fly and hop away above the sea.

Hop tells a story of the dream of flying, never giving up and above all, the unconditional relationship between a father and a son.!

We hope to see you at one of the MOKO Dance venues this summer!
